The effects of pesticides (including herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) on human health are complex and not completely understood. However, there are clear links between pesticide use and illness. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s role is to provide recommendations and information about pesticide use to the general public. The TBDHU supports the "precautionary principle" suggested by the Ontario Public Health Association and the Ontario College of Family Physicians on the use of pesticides. The TBDHU:
- Recommends that the public avoid exposure to pesticides
- Encourages communities to consider not using pesticides where possible
