Infectious diseases can be caused by different types of organisms including but not limited to bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungus that can be transmitted to humans in a variety of ways. Infectious diseases can pose a serious health risk and it is important to stop the spread as soon as possible. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s Infectious Disease Program is in place to reduce the burden of diseases of public health importance within Thunder Bay and District.
Staff in the Infectious Disease Program work together to:
- Investigate and monitor all reportable infectious diseases in the community and district
- Provide consultation, health education, and infection control policies and procedures for health-care facilities, licensed day care centres, and personal service settings (e.g. beauty salons, tattoo parlours and day spas)
- Assist in the management of outbreaks in health care facilities and other high-risk settings
- Increase knowledge and awareness through programs, services and interventions to prevent and control infectious diseases in the community
- Identify, monitor, and analyze disease trends to assist in the prevention and management of infectious diseases
- Inform the public of outbreaks through news releases, this website and other channels as needed
