AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The virus is passed from person to person through direct contact with blood or bodily fluids. You can get HIV in a number of ways including:
- Unprotected sex
- Sharing drug equipment (needles, spoons, filters, pipes, snorting devices, cookers, etc.)
- Tattooing or body piercing with unsterilized equipment
- Through breast milk.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, an estimated 25% of people living with HIV do not know they have it. They could spread the infection to another person unknowingly.
