Outbreak Over: Geraldton District Memorial Hospital

February 16, 2019 - The Enteric Outbreak that identified Norovirus on the Acute care side of Geraldton District Memorial Hospital was declared over February 16, 2019 at 10:00 am. All restrictions have been lifted.

The Health Unit is urging people to refrain from visiting hospitals and long-term care facilities when feeling unwell to avoid spreading infections to those most vulnerable: young infants and children, the elderly and those with other chronic illnesses.

The New Canada’s Food Guide – A Big Step Forward

The new and revised Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) was officially released last Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019. This is the second component of Health Canada’s Healthy Eating Strategy that has been released following the trans-fat ban on September 17th, 2018. Beyond how long it took (11 years) to update, my overall impression of the new guide is that it is worthy of recognition and applause. Here’s why:

Revised Canada’s Food Guide

Elementary Students to Receive Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Weekly!

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is happy to announce the start of the Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program! From January to June 2019, almost 16,000 students attending 87 northern elementary schools from Thunder Bay to Manitouwadge to Fort Severn will receive two free, weekly servings of fruits and vegetables through this initiative. The program will be making fresh produce available to children who may not otherwise have access to it during the winter months, including hundreds of children attending First Nations community schools.

February 4, 2019 - The outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at Hogarth Riverview Manor, Marigold Resident Home Area - 5 North, located at 300 N. Lilie Street, has been declared over at 9:45am today. All restrictions have been lifted.

January 25, 2019 - Officials at the Health Unit and Southbridge Roseview Manor, located at 99 Shuniah Street, have declared an outbreak of a respiratory illness located in the Celeste Resident Home Care Area only.

All admissions, transfers, discharges and social activities have been cancelled until further notice. Visitors are restricted to family members and caregivers only, so please call the facility for more information.

Outbreak Declared: Hogarth Riverview Manor (5 North)

January 22, 2019 - Officials at the Health Unit and Hogarth Riverview Manor, located at 300 N. Lillie Street, have declared an enteric outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in the Marigold Resident Home Area – 5 North today at 2pm.

A respiratory outbreak was also declared at Hogarth Riverview Manor in the Marigold Resident Home Area – 5 North today at 2pm.

Admissions, transfers, discharges and social activities have been cancelled until further notice. Visitors are restricted to family members and caregivers only, so please call the facility for more information.
