COVID-19 outbreak declared at Saint Joseph Catholic School

March 14, 2021 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and the Superior North Catholic District School Board confirm that an outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at Saint Joseph Catholic School in Geraldton.

Consistent with provincial guidelines, an outbreak is declared in a school when there are two or more COVID-19 cases in students or staff that can be linked within a school setting. At this time, one additional individual associated with the school has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual is deemed to have acquired the infection in the school setting.

TBDHU case screens positive for variant of concern

March 12, 2021 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) has received a report that an individual with COVID-19 in the TBDHU catchment area has screened positive for the N501Y mutation in the spike (S) gene of the COVID-19 virus. This mutation is associated with the variants of concern (VOC). Additional sequencing will be done to confirm this result and to determine the specific variant type. Currently the B.1.1.7 variant, also known as the UK variant, is the most common variant detected in Ontario.

COVID-19 Outbreak Declared Over at Chartwell Hilldale Retirement Residence

March 11, 2021 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and Chartwell Hilldale Retirement Residence announce that the outbreak at the retirement residence in Thunder Bay is now over.

Prior to the outbreak, significant measures were already in place at Chartwell Hilldale Retirement Residence to reduce likelihood of transmission of the virus within the facility. Expanded precautions were implemented for the duration of the outbreak.

The facility was part of the initial roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination program for Retirement Homes.

COVID-19 Outbreak Declared Over at Sherbrooke Public School

March 11, 2021 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and Lakehead Public Schools confirm that the outbreak of COVID-19 at Sherbrooke Public School in Thunder Bay is now over.

The period of heightened surveillance due to the recent cases at Sherbrooke Public School is considered over. No additional cases of COVID-19 have been identified and there is no evidence of additional spread within the school setting.
