Blue-Green Algae Identified at Surprise Lake

September 24, 2020 - The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae in a water sample collected at Surprise Lake in Gorham Township on September 16, 2020. The MECP is conducting toxin analysis on the water sample. However, it is important to remember that water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about 2 weeks after it has dissipated, regardless of the toxin analysis results because blue-green algae can turn toxin production on and off in response to environmental conditions.

Thunder Bay District Health Unit Ensuring Students Catch up on Immunizations

September 10, 2020 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is announcing that catch-up immunization clinics will be held in various locations throughout the City of Thunder Bay. 

Grade 8 students attending school in the City of Thunder Bay and surrounding communities who missed a Grade 7 vaccination due to the COVID-19 pandemic can now get an appointment at a TBDHU immunization clinic to receive any outstanding doses. Catch up immunizations for students in District communities were offered by TBDHU over the summer months.

Almost six months later, school doors are beginning to re-open to welcome students back for the 2020-2021 school year. These last 25 weeks have been marked with uncertainty, personal and economic sacrifice… and ultimately, with success in flattening the curve of the first wave of COVID-19 in our area.
